Carlo Piana is a lawyer admitted to the Milan Bar in Italy and focused on Information Technology and Telecommunication Law. His specialisations include Technology Transfer, Licensing Free/Open Source Software, digital rights and competition issues in the IT sector (where he has been active in some of the most relevant recent cases of world relevance).
As part of his outreach activities, Carlo acts as General Counsel of Free Software Foundation Europe, is a core member of the Freedom Task Force legal project and member of the Editorial Committee of the International Free and Open Source Law Review. He has represented FSFE and the Samba Team in the EU antitrust workgroup server and browser market cases and contributed to the debate surrounding the standardization of digital document formats in ISO. His clients include exclusively enterprises — from SMEs to large global corporations — in the IT and Telecommunication field, public authorities (such as regional and provincial governments) and non profit entities. He also assists pro bono groups and developers in the Free Software field. He is a representative agent for European Trademarks.
Carlo is a recommended expert in Italy and Europe for issues pertaining to Free Software by the FTF and one of the founding forces — as well as current Italian member — of EuroITcounsel, a quality circle of European lawyers specializing in IT &TLC law. He has been named in the Who’s Who Legal 2010 and 2011 in the Internet, Telecommunication & Privacy, in the 2013 e 2014 Information Technology section, and in the 2015 TMT-IT section.
